There is a Mauritius that sparkles in brochures – white-sand beaches, turquoise lagoons, luxury resorts framed by palm trees swaying in a postcard breeze. And then there is the other Mauritius. A land whispered through ancient stones, sung in forgotten lullabies, buried beneath layers of colonial narratives, and woven into the silences between facts.

This is the Mauritius I invite you to discover in The Hidden History of Mauritius: Forgotten Stories, Secret Places & Untold Truths.

Beneath the Surface: A Living Island of Memory

Mauritius has always been a crossroads – of continents, cultures, and currents. But far too often, its deeper stories are overlooked. Tourists sip rum on the beaches of Trou aux Biches, unaware that only a few miles inland lie the sacred stones of Le Morne, where marooned slaves once leapt to freedom. They visit colonial mansions with manicured gardens but rarely hear the chants that once echoed through sugarcane fields at dusk.

This book was born from a simple question: What have we forgotten — and why?

What emerged was a journey into a parallel island. One of lava tunnels said to house ancient spirits. Of women healers whose wisdom defied empires. Of sunken Dutch relics and crumbling Creole chapels where time bends.

And through each chapter, a deeper reflection: What does it mean to truly remember a place?

Travel Not to Escape – But to Awaken

Modern travel often brushes lightly over the surface of culture – snapshots taken, souvenirs collected. But there is a rising desire among mindful travellers for something more. A longing not only to see, but to feel a place. To walk not just with feet, but with wonder.

The Hidden History of Mauritius is a guide for this kind of journey.

Each chapter blends historical storytelling with personal, meditative reflections – a structure inspired by authors like Graham Hancock and Pico Iyer. After uncovering a story – such as the tale of the Bois Caiman ceremony or the lost village of Old Grand Por – readers are gently invited into a Mindful Reflection. Here, history becomes a mirror. The island becomes not only a destination, but a teacher.

Stories as Pathways, Places as Portals

For those visiting Mauritius – or dreaming of doing so – this book can be your compass to a different kind of tour. Seek out the hidden places. Sit beneath the banyan trees near Souillac and listen for the echoes of forgotten footsteps. Visit the ruins of Balaclava and read between the stones. Wander the forest trails of Chamarel not just for their beauty, but for the legends that rustle through the leaves.

This is slow travel. Conscious travel. The kind that doesn’t just change your itinerary – it changes you.

A New Kind of Island Experience

As part of the book’s journey, we’re also developing curated cultural tours and mindful retreats on the island – storytelling walks, folklore evenings, local guide collaborations, and historical immersion experiences that allow travellers to see Mauritius through the eyes of its ancestors and descendants.

These aren’t your average tours. They are soulful explorations.

Stay tuned – and if you’re a traveller, teacher, or tour operator interested in bringing this vision to life, I’d love to connect.

Final Thoughts: Why Remember?

In an age where so much is forgotten – or deliberately erased – memory is an act of rebellion. To remember the stories of those who came before us is to say: You mattered. Your truth still lives.

Mauritius is a jewel. Not just of nature, but of narrative. Her hidden history waits not in dusty archives, but in the windswept cliffs, the whispered stories of elders, the quiet hush of the earth at dusk.

Come. Walk with me.

Let’s remember together.

A Forgotten Legend Beneath the Waves of Mauritius

Mauritius – a land of breath-taking beauty and vibrant cultural heritage—holds more than just lagoons and laughter in its embrace. Beneath the sparkling surface of the Indian Ocean lie the remnants of forgotten empires, ghost ships, and whispered tales of treasure. Among the most captivating is the legend of a shipwrecked pirate and the lost fortune said to sleep beneath the reef near Le Morne.

A Pirate’s Last Breath in the Cyclone’s Eye

In the 1700s, the Golden Age of Piracy reached the shores of the Indian Ocean. Driven out of the Caribbean by European navies, many pirates sought refuge in the waters around Madagascar, Réunion, and Mauritius. Among them, the infamous Olivier Levasseur, better known as La Buse (“The Buzzard”), became legendary for the treasure he allegedly buried and the cryptic code he left behind. Though history records his execution in Réunion in 1730, whispers say a portion of his hoard may have been hidden in Mauritius.

Local legend, however, introduces a shadowier figure – a nameless sailor from La Buse’s crew – who met his fate when his vessel was caught in a violent cyclone near Île aux Benitiers. Witnesses claimed to have seen wreckage strewn across the reef: crates broken open, their contents glittering under the sun, before the ocean consumed them forever.

Some say the ship carried gold and silver; others insist it was ancient relics from the Middle East, stolen during a raid on a merchant convoy. What all agree on is this: no official records exist of the ship’s name, nor of its recovery. The treasure vanished. But the myth endured.

Murmurs from the Deep

Fishermen in the nearby village of La Gaulette still pass down stories of strange sightings on moonlit nights—lights beneath the water, shadows that move against the current, and sudden silences in the wind. One diver reportedly vanished after claiming he had found “the iron chest.” Another spoke of a black parrot—now extinct—that would appear when anyone came too close, cursing in a language no one understood.

Is this mere folklore? Perhaps. But the Mauritian coast is riddled with shipwrecks, many yet to be explored. With its shallow reefs and unpredictable weather, the southwest corner of the island was treacherous for sailors. Even today, modern divers occasionally find rusted coins or coral-covered fragments of wood, hinting at stories waiting to be unearthed.

A Diary, A Map, A Secret

One of the few documented clues surfaced in the 1970s, when an old leather-bound diary was discovered inside the walls of a crumbling colonial house near Souillac. The journal belonged to a French naval officer who served on the island in 1753. In it, he recounts an encounter with “a drunken Creole who swears by the Virgin that treasure lies beneath the cliffs of Benitiers.” The officer dismissed it as fantasy. Today, that diary remains in private hands – but its echoes have sparked a new generation of treasure hunters.

In recent years, professional expeditions have returned to the area using sonar, underwater drones, and magnetic sensors. Yet the treasure, if it exists, remains elusive – as if the sea itself has chosen to guard it.

A Mindful Reflection

There’s something profoundly human in our fascination with lost treasure. It speaks to more than greed or adventure – it speaks to longing. To recover what was lost. To uncover what was hidden. The pirate’s sunken chest becomes a mirror for our own inner treasures: the forgotten parts of ourselves, the quiet dreams buried under daily life, the wisdom we once had and lost.

We all have our storms, our shipwrecks. But what if, like the pirate’s ship, those wrecks contain gold?

As you walk the beaches of Mauritius, or gaze out across the reef from the cliffs of Le Morne, pause. Listen. What part of your soul is calling to be retrieved from the depths? What treasure lies just beneath your surface, waiting for you to dive?

Sometimes, the greatest discoveries are not made in the ocean, but in the quiet courage to look within.

On an unassuming stretch of sugarcane fields in the south of Mauritius, a mystery sleeps in plain sight.

They rise like whispers from the past – stone mounds shaped in stepped terraces, aligned with an uncanny precision that seems to mock coincidence. Locals call them “pyramids,” but their official existence has long been dismissed, obscured beneath decades of colonial agriculture, forgotten records, and sceptical scholars. And yet, once seen, they cannot be unseen.

Could it be that Mauritius, best known for its beaches and biodiversity, also cradles within its soil the architectural traces of a long-lost civilisation?

This is the story of the secret pyramids of Mauritius – a riddle wrapped in stone, stirring questions that stretch far beyond this island’s shores.

A Discovery Hidden in Plain Sight

The first time I saw a photograph of the pyramids of Plaine Magnien, I paused. It looked like something out of Egypt or Peru – a series of rock structures tiered in distinct steps, clearly man-made. And yet, there was something oddly familiar about the sugarcane around them, the light on the horizon. Mauritius.

For decades, these structures were assumed to be agricultural piles – rocks gathered to clear land for sugarcane. But in 2008, Italian researchers led by Dr. Augusto Cavaleri and Dr. Lorenzo Cecchi visited the island and proposed a far more radical idea: these were actual pyramids, deliberately aligned and constructed, possibly by a pre-colonial or unknown ancient people.

What if, they asked, Mauritius was part of a much older, interconnected web of civilizations? What if these pyramids had something in common with the ones in Tenerife or the sacred geometry of Egypt?

It was not a new theory, but it had never before been applied to Mauritius. The implications were staggering – and controversial.

Echoes of the Past, or Just a Mirage?

As a writer and former journalist, I’ve learned that history is often written not by victors alone – but by those with the loudest archives. And Mauritius, colonised multiple times, carries layers of forgotten or ignored narratives. Oral histories speak of old stones that “should not be touched.” Others recall rituals performed near them. Yet none of this made it into the official textbooks.

Sceptics argue these are nothing more than field clearings, arranged perhaps with some structure, but not ancient monuments. No inscriptions have been found. No bones. No gold.

But must a pyramid always be adorned with treasure to be sacred?

History teaches us that many indigenous cultures used natural elements—stone, soil, and light – as their building blocks of memory. The alignment of these Mauritian structures to solstice points and cardinal directions mirrors patterns found in sacred sites across the world. And that leads to a far more compelling question: what were these builders trying to tell us?

Beyond the Stones: A Symbolic Reflection

Whether built for burial, ritual, astronomy, or agriculture, pyramids across cultures have always shared one thing in common: they point upward.

In every tradition—from the Mayan temples to the Nubian tombs – pyramids act as bridges between earth and sky, between the known and the mystical. They are places of grounding and ascension.

If we take even a moment to believe that these Mauritian pyramids hold purpose beyond practicality, we begin to see the island not just as a dot in the ocean, but as a part of humanity’s collective memory – a place where ancient knowledge might still be sleeping under cane and cloud.

Mauritius has always been a meeting point – of people, oceans, and cultures. Perhaps it is also a meeting point of timelines, of old wisdom waiting to be remembered.

A Mindful Mystery

As I stood among these stone terraces, wind rustling through tall cane, I felt something stir. Not fear, not awe – but presence. There is power in mystery. In a world obsessed with answers, mystery asks us to listen instead.

The Secret Pyramids of Mauritius may never be definitively explained. Perhaps their true purpose is not to be solved, but to be felt – to awaken in us a quiet reverence for what came before, and what might still lie beneath our feet.

They remind us that history is not fixed. That truth is often layered, like the terraces themselves. And that sometimes, the most extraordinary stories are the ones hiding in plain sight.

Read more about the secrets of the Pyramids and other hidden stories in my latest book: ‘The Hidden History of Mauritius‘

There is a saying often whispered by those who have visited Mauritius: “You come for the beaches, but stay for the people.” It’s not just the palm-fringed lagoons or the mountain silhouettes that leave an impression – it’s the quiet, powerful harmony that exists among the island’s diverse cultures. In an increasingly divided world, Mauritius offers a rare and hopeful example of unity in diversity.

As a former journalist with roots in South Africa and a deep love for Mauritius, I’ve always been intrigued by what lies beneath the surface of a place. What stories pulse through its streets? What wisdom sleeps in its soil? And in Mauritius, one story stands out: how a small island became a microcosm of the world – Indian, African, Chinese, French, Creole—all living side by side, not without challenges, but with a remarkable degree of peace.

A Historical Mosaic

Mauritius was uninhabited when it was first discovered by Arab sailors and later colonized by the Dutch, then the French, and eventually the British. But the true story of its people begins with migration and movement – some voluntary, many forced.

The descendants of enslaved Africans brought by colonial powers, indentured labourers from India, Chinese merchants, and Franco-Mauritians all form part of the complex historical weave. Independence in 1968 didn’t erase these layered identities; instead, it gave birth to a nation that would learn to honour them all.

Rather than melt into one indistinct culture, Mauritians have nurtured their differences like heirloom seeds. The result is a society where Diwali is celebrated with as much enthusiasm as Eid, where Chinese New Year lanterns glow next to Catholic chapels, and where the sega drumbeat echoes across all communities.

Language as a Bridge

Walk through any Mauritian village and you’ll hear a melody of tongues: French, English, Mauritian Creole, Bhojpuri, Hindi, Tamil, Urdu, Mandarin, and more. Language, here, is not a weapon nor a barrier – it is a bridge.

Creole, the lingua franca, dances off the tongue with warmth and familiarity. It is a language born of blending, shaped by survival and adaptation, and it unites people across ethnic lines. Meanwhile, ancestral languages are kept alive in homes, temples, mosques, and community schools -not in isolation, but alongside one another.

This multilingualism is more than practical – it reflects a deep mutual respect. In Mauritius, it is not unusual for a single conversation to shift seamlessly between languages. It is not about showing off one’s knowledge, but rather honouring the person being spoken to. Language becomes an offering.

Festivals of Light, Faith, and Joy

What makes Mauritian culture so rich is not just the coexistence of different communities, but the way they participate in one another’s joy.

During Diwali, even non-Hindus light lamps and exchange sweets. On Eid, neighbours share biryani across religious lines. Chinese New Year brings lion dances and communal feasting. Christmas is celebrated in villages with as much love as in urban areas, and Tamil Cavadee processions draw people from all backgrounds in reverent awe.

These celebrations are not merely symbolic. They are lived, embodied expressions of unity. Children grow up attending each other’s ceremonies, learning from each other’s stories. Interfaith marriages, while not without complexity, are increasingly common. This lived pluralism is what makes Mauritius not just diverse, but deeply inclusive.

Unity Rooted in Mutual Recognition

Of course, no society is perfect. Mauritius faces its share of political, economic, and social challenges. There are tensions, historical wounds, and moments of disconnection. But what sets this island apart is its collective commitment to coexistence.

Unity in Mauritius is not enforced – it is cultivated. It is taught in schools, practised in everyday life, and quietly passed down like an ancestral prayer. It’s visible in the way elders greet each other with “Namaste” or “Salam” or “Bonjour” without hesitation or exclusion. It’s present in the way neighbours lend each other sugar or coconut on holy days, no questions asked.

In a time where division dominates headlines and cultural clashes seem to define the global narrative, Mauritius offers a different story: one of balance, beauty, and belonging.

A Mindful Island

For me, as someone who writes and teaches about mindfulness, Mauritius is more than just a setting – it is a teacher. Its people embody the very principles I strive to live by: presence, respect, compassion, and interconnectedness.

Perhaps that is the lesson the world can learn from this tiny island in the Indian Ocean: that diversity, when approached with humility and care, can become the very soil in which unity grows.

As we navigate our shared human story, may we look to Mauritius not as a utopia, but as a living example – a small island with a big heart, reminding us that we do not have to be the same to walk together in peace.

Mauritius – a name that often conjures images of turquoise waters, white sandy beaches, and luxurious resorts. Yet, beyond its idyllic tourist appeal, this island harbors a history filled with forgotten stories, untold truths, and secret places waiting to be rediscovered. In The Hidden History of Mauritius: Forgotten Stories, Secret Places & Untold Truths, we embark on a journey through time, uncovering the island’s enigmatic past and exploring how its layered history shapes its present.

A History Beyond the Colonial Narrative

Most historical accounts of Mauritius focus on the colonial timeline – first discovered by the Arabs, settled by the Dutch, ruled by the French, and later taken over by the British before gaining independence in 1968. But what about the voices lost in these dominant narratives?

The Hidden History of Mauritius dives into the pre-colonial mysteries of the island. Were there inhabitants before the arrival of European explorers? Some local legends and archaeological findings suggest so. The book also explores long-forgotten shipwrecks, the island’s role in the global spice and slave trades, and the hidden heritage of the Indo-Mauritian, African, Chinese, and Creole communities who shaped its culture.

Forgotten Stories That Resurface

Through meticulously researched historical records, folklore, and oral traditions, The Hidden History of Mauritius brings to light stories that have faded into obscurity. Some of these include:

The Lost Civilizations Theory: Could there have been ancient visitors before the Dutch landed in the 16th century? Some clues suggest hidden connections with ancient maritime traders.

The Dodo’s True Story: While most know about its extinction, few realize the deeper ecological and economic factors that led to its disappearance.

The Forgotten Maroons: Escaped slaves who built secret settlements in the mountains, resisting colonial rule in ways that are rarely acknowledged in mainstream history.

Secret Tunnels and Underground Hideouts: From pirate hideaways to old resistance shelters, the island has an underground network that few have explored.

Sacred Sites and Lost Temples: Ancient places of worship, some still standing and others lost to time, that reveal the island’s deep spiritual and multicultural history.

Mysticism, Folklore, and the Supernatural

No history of Mauritius would be complete without acknowledging the myths and supernatural beliefs that continue to influence its people. From stories of ghosts haunting old sugar estates to the whispered legends of hidden treasures left by pirates, The Hidden History of Mauritius embraces the mystical side of the island’s past.

Mindful Reflection: Connecting Past and Present

Each historical narrative in the book is followed by a Mindful Reflection—a contemplative segment designed to invite readers to connect personally with Mauritius’ past. Inspired by the approach of authors like Graham Hancock, these reflections weave history with self-inquiry, encouraging us to ponder themes of loss, resilience, and the human connection to the land.

For instance, after exploring the fate of the maroon communities, a mindful reflection might ask: How do we honor the resilience of those who fought for freedom? What remnants of their spirit can we still feel in the landscape today? These sections transform the book into more than just a historical account—it becomes a personal journey for the reader.
